Youth School for Social Justice

Austin Voices for Education and Youth and the School of Social Work at The University of Texas is pleased to announce the commencement of the Social Justice Saturday School on October 21, 2006 (10:00am to 1:00pm @ Texas Union – UT Campus).

This program is a follow up to the very successful 6 week Social Justice Summer School that was held at Lanier High School in Austin, Texas earlier this year.

In this Social Justice Saturday School, high school and college students will have the opportunity to hear from university professors, community activists and veterans of the Chicano Movement as they share their views on the history of social protest, community organizing, agenda setting in the Latino community and why it is important to stand up and be heard. Students will also be introduced to the life and work of Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Ghandi, Dorothy Day through a series of films, debates and discussions.

This 5 week program will be held on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin in the Texas Union from 10:00am to 1:00pm on Saturdays when there is no home football games. (10-21-06, 10-28-06, 11-11-06, 11-18-06, 12-2-06) Students will be provided with breakfast and lunch at no cost to them. Afterwards students will get to go the Underground for a billard and bowling tournament.

This program is an excellent example of how an institution of higher education can reach out to the community. It is also a very creative way to build that “educational pipeline” and expose students to the idea that a college education is something is within their reach.
