Monday, Oct. 30 – Red Salmon Arts presents a reading and book signing of Malinche’s Daughter by anti-violence activist/writer Michelle Otero. This astounding debut collection of essays limns the author’s journey to Oaxaca, Mexico to guide a writers’ workshop for women survivors of sexual assault. In the process, Otero confronts the pain of her own childhood as well as cultures-north and south-which have been deaf to women’s voices. 7pm.
Michelle Otero was raised along the US-Mexico border in Deming, New Mexico. As a Fulbright Fellow, she taught creative writings workshops for women survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Oaxaca, Mexico. She is a founding member of The Women Writers’ Collective, an El Paso-based group that showcases the talents of women writers and artists while raising awareness of women’s issues. A committed anti-violence activist, she volunteers with Amigos de las Mujeres de Juarez, and in 2004, helped coordinate and lead the V-Day International “March on Juarez” to protest the murders of over 300 women. Her work has appeared in Puerto del Sol, Artful Dodge, Border Senses, and other journals in the US and Mexico. A graduate of Harvard University and Vermont College, she lives in Alburquerque, New Mexico, and is working on Vessels, a memoir of borders.
