Religious Values and Torture: Moral Questions for a Changing World

A panel discussion followed by a Q&A session. The panel will consist of 5-7 religious leaders and lay experts from diverse faith backgrounds.

Representatives of the Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist and Christian communities have been invited. The following panelists have committed to participate as of November 8, 2006.

Moderator – Rev. Emilee Whitehurst, Executive Director, Austin Area Interreligious Ministries

Bonnie Tamres-Moore, founder of OpposeTorture.org and a founding member of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture

Rabbi Melissa Weintraub, Director of Education and Organizing at Rabbis for Human Rights – North America and the author of numerous of articles addressing torture and Jewish values.

Sheikh Umer Mohammed, Imam of North Austin Muslim Community Center

Rev. Tim Tutt, Immediate past president of the Austin Area Interreligious Ministries and Pastor of the United Christian Church of Austin .

John Dinsmore, Austin Zen Center

Rev. Dr. Sid Hall, Minister at Trinity United Methodist Church , author of Christian Anti-Semitism and Paul’s Theology and a leader in the Reconciling Ministries Network within the United Methodist Church
