Nonmilitary Options for Youth:

NOY formed in 1997 to do direct outreach in area high schools as a balance to military recruitment. We have access to all the public high schools in AISD, where we do literature tabling during lunch hours and career fairs and classroom presentations when invited. In 2005/06, along with Youth Activists of Austin, we worked with AISD officials to create a district policy that places certain limits on military recruitment in schools. NOY funds are used primarily for literature and other educational items for students. Donations to NOY are not tax-deductible. For more info about NOY, see www.progressiveaust in.org/nmofy

Mark Wilkerson:

After serving one tour of duty with the US Army in Iraq, Mark applied for conscientious objector status. When his application was denied and he faced imminent deployment to a second tour in Iraq, Mark went AWOL. Later, Mark turned himself in at Ft. Hood, TX. At his court-martial in February 07, he was sentenced to 7 months prison with a bad conduct discharge for desertion. He served 5 months at the Ft. Sill Army brig and was released with good time in July. Since his release, Mark has resumed his involvement with Iraq Veterans Against the War and is enrolled in college in his home town in Colorado. Funds raised at the yard sale will go toward Mark’s college and living expenses. For more info about Mark, see www.couragetoresist.org
