Saturday and Sunday November 22nd and 23rd, St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, 606 W. 15th St.
Just in time for the Holidays: Saturday and Sunday November 22nd and 23rd 10:00am- 7:00pm, the AFSC (Austin Office) presents its fifth annual Women and Fair Trade Craft Sale and Cultural Event. All eight of the participating vendors are groups comprised of women who have been affected by globalization processes; and in turn have organized cooperatives to replace income lost as a result.
They bring beautiful, handmade crafts, toys, pottery, jewelry, clothing and textiles to market in time for the holidays. Join us in promoting international trade that provides income and empowerment to artisans who are committed to improving their lives and communities through cooperative effort. There will be a wide range of products from Palestine, Latin America, Africa, India and Texas, as well as speakers discussing their personal experiences with “free” and fair trade.
There will also be music, a film screening and a multimedia performance (see below). 10% of the proceeds will go to the American Friends Service Committee, Austin.
See www.womenandfairtrade.org for a full event schedule
On Sunday Afternoon, at 2:00pm:
The American Friends Service Committee, Austin Office Presents:
“From Unraveled Lives to Woven Cloth:
Stories from the hurricane’s wake”
What happens to people displaced by both hurricanes and free trade? What disparities do the hurricanes reveal? What are the survival strategies that people marginalized by “free” trade discover? These are some of the questions we will address in the From Unraveled Lives to Woven Cloth presentation.
This event features performances and testimonies of survivors of Hurricanes from Galveston and Houston, as well as New Orleans. Ultimately this cultural event presents the hope of the human spirit as it heals lives and invents new ways to survive using one’s own two hands.
