ISO PUBLIC FORUM: UNEMPLOYMENT, DEBT, AND TUITION HIKES:
WHERE’S OUR BAILOUT? With each passing day, we hear about and experience more and more bad news about the economy. The U.S. has lost 3.6 million jobs over the last year, and almost 600,000 in the month of January alone. As the economy sours, workers find themselves buried under mortgage and other debt, increasing the pace of foreclosures and evictions. State and municipal budgets are being slashed, leading to cuts in services when they are needed the most and skyrocketing tuition for those seeking a college education. Now there is a fight in Washington, as politicians debate the merits of further bailouts for banks — or their nationalization — and what kind of spending can bring badly-needed relief. Popular anger towards the bankers and CEOs is on the rise as many see themselves left out of these plans. Come to discussion on what is happening with the economy, and how pressure from below can and must influence the debate on how to bring relief to those in need.
