Careers and Social Justice

Wednesday, April 29, 3 pm, UT campus, Chicano Culture Room (4.206)

Cristina Tzintzun, Workers Defense Project, “Working for Social Justice: Career and Life Choices” — Most students struggle with career choices when they graduate, but young people who want to be part of struggles for social justice often face the toughest choices. Through what kind of work can one make a meaningful contribution? What kinds of organizations are most successful in this work? Should one seek paid employment or volunteer? How does one balance personal, professional, and political goals?

In an informal seminar, Cristina Tzintzun of the Workers Defense Project/Proyecto Defensa Laboral (PDL) in Austin will speak to these questions, drawing on her experience to help students develop ideas and plans for their own futures.

PDL is a membership-based organization that empowers Latina/o immigrant workers to act collectively for racial and economic justice in the workplace through leadership development, education, organizing and collaborating with strategic allies. Tzintzun, a graduate of the University of Texas with a degree in Latin American studies and a minor in history, has worked with PDL for five years, first as a community organizer and now as director.
