Bus Riders Union – ATX Plan

The Bus Riders Union will present our plan at the monthly Capital Metro Board of Directors meeting on October 28, 2009 at 4PM at Metro HQ (5th & Pleasant Valley)

The Bus Riders Union-ATX proudly announces the release of our plan for a transit grid bus route system for Austin, Texas. The Bus Riders Union-ATX is a collective of bus riders organized to push for a better, more accessible transit system in Austin, Texas. In 2008 we proposed a fare free bus system that will make transit in Austin faster and fairer for all Austin residents. The proposal drew from a number of sources including the Kheel Report (2008) from New York City, the High Performance Transit Plan of 2000 in Austin, and the fare-free period at Capital Metro in 1989-90. The Fare-Free Proposal can be found on our website

The Bus Riders Union-ATX Transit Grid Plan of 2009 compliments the 2008 proposal. With hundreds of years of combined transit experience, no one knows more about the strengths and weaknesses of the current system than the Bus Riders Union-ATX. Through collective energy, research and common sense we have developed a system that maximizes efficiency by completely redesigning the system for straighter alignments and a grid orientation that acknowledges a modern Austin.

The system is comprised of 8 north and south routes, 21 east and west routes, and one diagonal route. The north and south axis of the grid is IH35, and the east and west axis is the Lake Austin Blvd./Cesar Chavez corridor. The basic grid expands current coverage, and maximizes efficiency allowing for the ultimate goal of the Bus Riders Union-ATX: A 24 hour system that meets the demands of our 24 hour city.
