7:00pm – 8:30 pm Tuesday, March 30th, 2010, Resistencia Bookstore, Casa de Red Salmon Arts, 1801-A South 1st Street, Austin, Tejas

A film screening of THE LAND SPEAKS ARABIC (Austin premiere) presented by Palestine Online Store & Resistencia Bookstore. Free and open to the public, discussion to follow.

March 30th is Land Day in Palestine, a commemoration and tribute to those who have fallen in the struggle to hold onto their land and identity. The date marks events happening in 1976, when Israel announced the expropriation of huge swaths of land for “security and settlement purposes.” Palestinians in Israel responded by going on strike, and organized non-violent marches to which the Israeli army and police responded with gunfire, killing six Palestinian civilians and wounding hundreds of others.

The 60-minute award-winning documentary film by Maryse Gargour, The Land Speaks Arabic shines a spotlight on the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by the Zionist movement. It examines the birth of Zionism, and its repercussions for Palestinians, and includes original source documents, Zionist leaders’ quotations, rare archival footage, testimonies of witnesses, and interviews with historians. All help to illustrate that the expulsion of the indigenous Arab population from Palestine was premeditated and not just a result of the 1948 war.

Q&A / discussion will follow, led by Ziyad Doany, a Palestinian activist raised in Lebanon after his family was forced to leave Palestine. Also, new Palestinian products section will be unveiled at Resistencia Bookstore, so come early if you’d like to browse the selection of books, films, music CD’s, handcrafts, posters, and solidarity items, and more!**
