St. Andrew’s Summer Film Series: “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez.” This 1982 film, starring Edward James Olmos and directed by Robert M. Young, is based on the book “With His Pistol in His Hand”: A Border Ballad and Its Hero by the late University of Texas professor Américo Paredes. Based on a popular “corrido” depicting an incident inGonzales, Texas, in 1901, the story revolves around a stolen horse, mistaken identity and a killing. Cortez, a Mexican cowhand working the ranges around San Antonio, kills a sheriff in self defense as he’s about to be arrested, leading to an 11-day manhunt. Walt Herbert describes the film as, “A social justice story, about cruelty and moralist delusions that is very close to home.”
