Conversation with Eliza Gilkyson

Sunday, July 18, 6 pm, 5604 Manor Road

Confronting Collapse through Art: A Conversation with Eliza Gilkyson. In June we kicked off a new series of gatherings to explore the question, “What does it mean to be human?” One of the topics that emerged in that discussion was our struggles to confront the ecological crisis, honestly but without going crazy. Those struggles are made easier when we engage our creative capacities and storytelling abilities, and find grassroots projects that provide a way for us to contribute to the community.

The July 18 gathering will explore that creativity through a conversation with singer/songwriter Eliza Gilkyson, whose last CD, “Beautiful World,” included several songs on these themes. Gilkyson, one of the co-conveners of the Last Sunday series in 2006, will talk about not only her songwriting process but the role of art for everyone in this endeavor.

Also speaking will be Susan Leibrock from the Sustainable Food Center, which cultivates a healthy community by strengthening the local food system and improving access to nutritious, affordable food. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 5604 Manor, the new progressive community center launched by the Third CoastActivist Resource Center and Workers Defense Project. Coming up on Sunday, August 15: “Spirituality and Economics: A Conversation with Jim Rigby”
