  • We support moves to make the world a more peaceful place and reduce the risk of war.

  • We decry Monday's terrorist attacks, but urge sanity. We must make clear that the US should no longer target civilians, or accept any policy which targets civilians by any nation.

We support an intensive investigation and urge cooperation by all states and NGOs to assist in helping determine who was behind these attacks. We urge the creation of an international court to try crimes against humanity. Once sufficient evidence is found to implicate specific individuals, we urge it to be provided to the apropriate country so that the person(s) involved may be arrested and extradicted to such an international court (or US court) for trial. If a conviction results those responsible should be incarcerated for life without parole.

We should not allow these attacks to be excuses for chipping away at our rights. We can even quote George Bush in this regard:

"Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. " The only way our freedom and way of life came under attack is by making it more likely that the government will take steps to violate our freedoms and way of life. If the government takes such steps, that means that we are allowing the terrorist acts to succeed. "Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America." If the government proposes any restriction on First Amendment rights, that is continued chipping away at the foundation (the Constitution and Bill of Rights) of the USA.

  • We support for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.
  • We support the " Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund" bill.
  • We oppose military attacks against Iraq, Colombia, Indonesia, and other countries, as they will increase civilian deaths and misery.
  • We oppose military and "security" assistance to repressive regimes.
  • We call upon the American public to stongly oppose war.
  • We oppose the stockpiling and use of land mines and demand that the US sign the treaty against them. See Austin Adopt a Minefield.
  • We support Austin's Nonmilitary Options for Youth in showing high school youth choices they have for the future other than joining the military.
  • We oppose the harsh sanctions that have been imposed upon Iraq for over 8 years which have resulted in the deaths of over 1,500,000 Iraqis, over half of them children as a result of lack of medicine, safe water (due to destruction of water & sewage treatment plants), ambulances, and malnutrition.
  • We oppose the continual bombing of Iraq.
  • Let Congress and the administration know of your opposition to military attacks and sanctions and support of the test ban treaty.
  • The Consitution gives Congress the authority to declare war and lesser military operations (in 18th century language, "grant letters of marque and reprisal"). President Clinton has usurped this power of Congress in bombing other countries without Congresional approval! Clinton has abused his official powers by taking a power granted to Congress (that of war).
  • Flood Congress, the executive branch, newspapers, and radio call-in shows with well reasoned opposition to military interventions, war, and sanctions! Use the resources listed below for assistance in creating letters. Emails and faxes can be sent automatically from these web pages.

    News

FBI Report Claims Deaths of Colombian Civilians Caused by U.S. Bomb, from Frank Smyth, 22 September

European newspapers reported that the US intentionally bombed the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. The US agreed to pay China $27,000,000 in recompense. The US press is not covering the story. [links to the original story and an update in the Observer appear broken (but may be up again)]

The KLA entered Kosovo under NATO protection and burned monestaries and chased the majority of the Serbs remaining in Kosovo out of the province. NATO has done little to stop this ethnic cleansing. Instead they are trying to convert the terrorists into a local "police" force.

NATO has been violating the peace accord since it was signed.

    Dear Rep. Doggett:

Please respond to the "Dear Colleague" letter your office has just
received from Rep. John Lewis by co-sponsoring or otherwise actively
supporting the Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund bill. The bill will be
introduced soon and referred to your House Committee on Ways and Means.

As you know, the RFPTF would provide urgently needed relief to thousands
of citizens who cannot in good conscience for religious or ethical
reasons pay some or all of their federal income taxes, almost 50% of
which go for current military operations and past wars.

Thank you for your attention. Please keep me informed of your actions on
    this issue.

    Sincerely,
